Office space

For our home office, I fell in love with this inspiration pic:
But as always in my case, I strayed from the original idea. When you have a husband like I do who primarily uses the office for work, function takes precedence over decor. Imagine that. Darn him and his corporate world.

So, I more or less went with my own interpretation of the inspiration photo. (disclaimer: I love the lines of our current desk and was seriously considering painting it a glossy black........but I didn't have the heart to slap paint on its' gorgeous cherry finish, so it's going to stay this way.) Anyway, I'm pretty pleased with how the room turned out:

My attempt to "chic-up" the futon Mr. FC refuses to get rid of:

glass tear drop chandelier from Urban Outfitters:

the organized shelf:

Glad I took pictures because this desk is never going to look this clean again...........Being the neurotic perfectionist that I am though, some issues:

-Mr. FC is pretty adamant about keeping his manly, comfy black desk chair. I, however, am coveting this ridiculously-expensive-uncomfortable-but-oh-so-chic chair. Lumbar support be damned, I WILL own this chair or something similar ;o)

-While the wood-colored blinds are functional, I'd like something more feminine in the way of window treatments. Just can't decide. Ideas?

-Also, I'm not totally in love with the rug. What do you think? Is the print too busy-looking for the small space? Should I go with a classic, solid ivory shag rug instead?

I *love* the office inspiration pic. and I think you did a great job with your interpretation. I would love to have a fancy looking office at some point, too, but the office is R's room, and I don't think he would let me make it pretty.

I love the rug, too, and I think it works fine. but I'm also a huge fan of black and white damask prints.

Wow, I'm beyond impressed. What that office could do for my mental sanity!

Awww, thx ladies!! I'm loving it more and more. DH thinks it could be a bit less feminine, but whatev =)

Roxy~
No problem at all! The paint is Valspar Coastal Villa from Lowe's. It's a beautiful gray IRL.

Great job, it looks awesome! I too love the paint color and the rug - where is it from?

Beautiful job FC--I love it! The paint color is perfect, the rug looks great, and I'm IN LOVE with that chandelier. Fabulous job, girl!

Kel~ I know, DH is the same way. I had to just do it one day when he was out of town and once he got back, he was like, "Hey, what changed in here?" HA!

Abby~ The rug is from Lowe's, believe it or not. It's more like a thick towel, so it's definitely not what I'd call "cushy". I'm thinking a rug pad underneath it would add some softness. It was more the damask pattern that caught my eye-definitely more decorative than functional =)

Beautiful. That chandelier is so cool, good old Urban!

This turned out beautiful...definitely makes me want to rethink the beige in our office for your gray tone.

Girl! I looooove it--everything!

And the desk staying original really ties into the wooden mirrors.

So glad you posted pics!

love the rug - it totally works. When you figure out how to get the husband to agree to switch chairs - let me know how its done. My own loves his man-chair and it is hideous :)

Oh how I loooove that chandelier! Gorgeous room!

I'm pretty sure I'll be keeping the rug now, after hearing all of your kind words about it (and the room). Thanks so much for your comments--lurve them, as always!!

Katie~I'll work my mojo on the man-chair situation and will let you know how that goes. It could be a while.... =)

I love the rug too so Im glad to hear you're keeping it.

The futon actually looks pretty nice in here...not having arms helps it keep to scale.

I am in total agreement with everyone else! It looks great! And I love the rug too! Really love it! Great job!

I love the rug! I think your chair would get caught up in the ivory shag, too. And that wall color is so rich and lovely!

FC, love the new office. Mr. FC must be pretty pleased that you updated the space without sacrificing his favorite things I can't understand his reluctance to get rid of his big office chair. Mine only left because it broke. :( But now I see the error of my ways.

Especially love the "Keep Calm & Carry On" print and the Urban teardrop fixture. We've got that same one hanging in our half-bath, but we didn't take the time to actually wire it. So it's nice see what it looks like with a bulb!

Keep up the great work!

Many, many, many thanks you guys for your compliments! It just warms my heart.

Thanks Mrs. L for seeing the potential in the futon =)

Laura, that's a great point about the shag getting caught in the chair. Even more of a reason to keep the current rug, thx!

Thx John for visiting my blog! I adore the work you and Sherry have done on your house, so hearing your feedback is awesome. If only Mr. FC can see the error of his ways regarding his "man chair" too. I'm workin' on it =)

I love the rug, the little boxes, the wall color, all of it. We just painted our guestroom gray & decided to change it to our office & I needed the inspiration to make gray hip. *found your blog via ramblingrenovators.blogspot.com :)

I love everything in your room. I saw that picture on the Elle Site and feel in love. Great taste. Similar to what I want to do...

Where did you get the rug in your office?

Tamstyles said...

Hey...when you get a chance come check out my update in my office. Still no paint or beautiful light, but thats all I need now.

Ok, this is TOO TOO weird!! In June I painted my living room and guest room Coastal Villa from Lowe's! I had never seen anyone else paint with gray, and I took about a month choosing the perfect shade all by myself. How strange that it's the exact same color you used! And I have black and white damask everywhere too!

Our office pics are very similar! I just discovered your blog after a friend pointed out the similarity. lol
May I ask where you got the rug and the keep calm and carry on mini frames?

delightfuldwelling said...

Oooh, another awesome room. This is similar to what I want for our office which is a cluttered mismatch of stuff right now. Love the rug and chandelier.

love your style. and no I don't think it is similar at all to the one who said it was. Do You? I love your style. And I am a old fuddy duddy. You just might change my ways! I'm going to blog about your site, if that is okay.. and check back occasionally for your posts. [See I usually do cottages!]

If one were ambitious and maybe talented [ which I am not] one could paint that design on canvas, in such a way to mimic your rug.
Best of luck.

arootdigger2 said...

Forgot to add, if even more abitious the hook and rug craft could yield same design as rug. But I have no idea of the outcome of cost.

The rug is fabulous, it caught my eye. Have you found one? (maybe you said where and I missed it!)
