Is white always right?

Well, I thought painting our fireplace mantle white would be
the right decision for our living room..............now, I'm not so sure.

{before}
Although it doesn't look too bad here, the varnished wood in real life was in poor shape
& had an orange tint to it. The dirty peachy-pink tile is 26 yrs old and screams '80's to me.
{sanded} {after}
1 coat of Kilz Gripper primer & 2 coats of Benjamin Moore China White {satin}
(after seeing Teresa use it on her gorgeous nursery dresser).The plan is to replace the tile (it's so blah) but that can't be done until after we replace the fireplace insert (it's horribly old and inefficient). Which won't happen until this summer.

While I adore the color (it's the perfect soft white w/ no yellow undertones), I can't decide if I'm in love with the new white look. It's probably the tile that's throwing me off! Mr. FC prefers the wood look. Then again if he had his way, our home would look like a fraternity house.
Thoughts? Because, though I love the man, you all have better taste than Mr. FC =o)

  3. I really like the white, I think it looks good.

    Agree that the tile is blah -- the new insert and tile will make a big difference.

  4. I think the white looks much better! (and it will definitely look nicer with new tiles, etc).

    Nice work!

  7. I say put the kibosh on Husband Frat Boy's wood obsession-- the white looks great! :)

    Can't wait to see what it looks like with a new insert and tile.

  8. White IS right. Sorry, Mr. FC, you don't know what you're talking about. :) It looks gorgeous. P.S. I just noticed that you're a Jane Austen fan. Be careful...we may have to be best friends. :)

  10. Why is it that most men love all things wood? Such a strange ailment.

    I love it white, definitely the right decision. I also think the rug is a perfect match to the tile, makes blend more with the entire room, in a good way.

    Thumbs up from me!

  11. I love the white, but mine is white also so....It looks better that way to me.

  12. Ok, love it! It looks 1000% better in white. I may be biased because I grew up in house full of that orangy colored oak - cabinets, trim, floors - and I have always hated it. I think white is timeless.

  13. I love the white!! I think once you replace the tile it will be perfect.

  14. Absolutely perfect! I love China White - I'm using that for all of the trim in my house. What's up with men (except for Michael) and their love for stained wood?

  15. We had a similar situation with 80s tile (but my hubby had to build me a mantel). We wound up ripping out the tile, putting in new drywall and repainting the fireplace part with high heat paint. It made such a HUGE difference and I think taking the tile out will help here too.

  16. I also love the white. It already looks 100x times better!

    And, I just may be tempted to take down the mirror and lean it against the mantle with some other overlapping frames!

  17. I think the white is a huge improvement! once the tiles are changed out, it'll look gorgeous I'm sure.

  19. Much better girl! Much much better. It looks brand spankin new - and the white makes the detail actually noticable! I definitely think it looks 100% better. Great job girl!

  24. I like the white so much better. Oh, and I can relate with you on the pinky-looking tile. Our current rental has it, and while it doens't look bad in our place, it is a little blah. Our new house will have faux-stone clading for a bit of interest.

  31. WOW! It's unanimous--how can I NOT like the white even more now! Thank you so much for your support. And you're all right; it's growing on me and once we change out the tile, it'll be worth it. I do love how the detailing shows up more now.

    I'd like to say welcome to all my new visitors. Thanks for dropping by w/ your valuable comments! I'm so happy to have you all as readers. And thanks to those whose blogs brought me new readers--you're the best =)

  35. I like the white much better too! It goes well with the trim and paint and makes the mantel pop.

    I'm not sure if this is something you'd want to do, but I think the metal/brass frame would look nice if painted white as well. It'll pull the look more together, even with the temporary outdated tiles.

  36. I'm loving the white! What color is on your walls? I also have the same weird colored tile. What color are you planning on changing the tile to? So glad I found your blog.

  37. @ Thelnie: The wall color is Valspar's Arid Plains from Lowe's. It's a great warm latte color!

    Ideally I'd love to switch out the tile surround for carrara or calacutta marble mini subway tiles!
