The Loo (aka the bathroom reno that took forever)

Well, now Mr. FC can add plumbing to his list of skills. He has this ability to teach himself anything when it comes to home improvement. Meticulous. Patient. Insistent on the DIY route when possible. I'm still mastering the caulking gun (baby steps). Then I get frustrated and am all "Why aren't we done yet?" and he's all "Simmer down. Think about the money we're saving." Then I'm all "I should have married rich."

But by golly am I glad he has skills.
And now, the room that elicited a lack of sleep and several break-up threats:
(Click on photo to enlarge. My apologies for the grainy quality--the lighting's tricky in there!)

{Some "detail" shots}
A close-up of the marble vanity top. Not the sexiest faucet out there but this is one of the only bathroom faucets (for an 8 inch spread) with the single control feature! Because we really are THAT lazy. Heaven forbid we have to operate 2 separate handles for hot and cold water.

I had all these plans for a fancy light fixture, but none of them put out enough light for our windowless bathroom--so ours is nothing too exciting. But it does the job!
We got lucky as the bathtub surround tile were all in good shape (though not really our style but we can live with it as it is fairly new). Everything else we bid adieu to. Everything was done by Mr. FC and myself on weekends and in between living life......... which is why it took 5 long weeks (save for hooking up the old toilet/sink downstairs, which we had a plumber do as it had to be up to code) . As fellow renovaters can attest to, it's the little things that expend much time and energy. Patching drywall and holes, caulking, refurbishing the baseboards, grouting, sealing tile, sealing tile again, sealing the marble vanity top, sealing it again, oh my.......

Budget breakdown:marble top vanity (Costco): $499
faucet (Price Pfister's the "Amherst"): $138 (on sale, originally $237)
toilet (Jacuzzi): $130
honed slate tiles (Home Depot, special order): $250
tiling supplies: ~$160
vent grate (Lowe's): $13
mirror (HomeGoods): $40
light (Lowe's): $84
fixtures (Home Depot): $35
shower curtain (Ballard Designs): Free? We've had it for 3 yrs now.
accessories/paint ---> Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter mixed a custom shade darker (satin): ~$60

approx. TOTAL = $1,409

The best part--We don't have to do our business down here anymore.
Unless we're looking to shake things up a bit.
On to the next project.............

  1. OH my! My reader hasn't been showing me your new posts, so I had some catching up to do today. WHAT a day to catch up! The bathroom is fantastic! You aren't giving yourself enough credit. I think every drop of it is gorgeous! Well done!

  2. It looks beautiful! I have to ask, though, where do you put your STUFF? It looks like the old bathroom had a lot more storage space. I ask because I have to bathrooms with this exact layout and I get frustrated because there's nowhere to put towels, cosmetics, curling irons, etc.

  5. Thank you everyone! =) Sooo glad to be finished w/ this project!

Reborn~ I'm a very "anti-clutter" person, can you tell? =) The vanity has a pull down drawer (for toiletries) and there's also a massive basket underneath (for TP and other stuff). We also have a linen closet right outside the bathroom which helps. I must say, I'm so thrilled to see that old cabinet over the toilet gone!!

I can't tell what photo is in the frame but I like the asymetrical matting. Its very chic and modern without being cold. Fab!

  37. Wow fantastic! I love the feeling of this space. I was wondering....

    1. What color is on the walls?
    2. Where did you get the vanity?
    3. Where did you get the vent grill?
    4. What is the picture above the toliet?

Fantactic, and only 5 weeks? It took my 5 weeks to do my laundry room and there was no plumbing involved! Great job.

  38. Okay, So I was so amazed at your reno pictures, I barely read the bottom where you break everything down and answer all of the questions I had....

    Opps :)

    Take care,

  39. I'm resisting the uncontrollable urge to hug each one of you for your wonderful, flattering comments. LOL! Thank you! I think I'll rent out Mr. FC's mad skills for anyone interested =)

SweDaisy~ No worries and awww you're too kind! The only thing I didn't mention (b/c I'm not sure if it's staying) is the framed photo above the toilet. I like the asymmetrical frame but not the pic (it's of aspen trees from a trip to Aspen). Since there's no window in this room, I wanted a picture of the outdoors so I'm still searching. =)

  40. LOL - one more thing. I featured you on my blog today.

  46. This is delicious! I love all the details - down to the A/C floor cover thingy. <--- that's the technical term for it, right?

You should seriously write a book about how to do beautiful renovations on a budget! I can't believe you made such a wonderful improvement for less than $1,500!
