Golden

Sometimes it takes someone else's grief to make you realize how blessed you are in your own life. I'm not a religious person but I strongly believe we all go somewhere in the afterlife. Even our beloved pets. And I just hope that that "somewhere" is the same somewhere we end up, too.

Our friends had to say good-bye to their beloved Kirby unexpectedly yesterday. He was only 9 1/2. What seemed like it was just a doggie cough turned into a visit to the vet, and within hours, the knowledge that he had a tumor and the cancer had spread rapidly. Exhibiting true Golden behavior, he never once "complained" or acted anything less than exuberant. Even on his last day with them, up until the last beat of his loyal heart.

We loved him like he was our own. He was also our dog, Hiro's best friend. We already miss him dearly. How he used to seek comfort by sticking his face in your crotch. How he would let you lay on him for hours. How gentle he was with little kiddos. How he could give you a "high-five". How he always brought you an article of clothing every time you walked in the door. How that one time we all went camping, he came back with a deer carcass leg, trotting triumphantly like he was bearing a trophy.

As they prepared to say a farewell that nothing could have prepared them for, Kirby's tail thumped just as cheerfully and devotedly as it always had. Michelle & Jeremy, you are in our thoughts and Kirbs will always be in our hearts.

Hug your pets close. We don't get much time with them here. Make every moment with them their best memory and it will also be yours.

  2. Thinking about your friend's family and also of your family during this tough time. Our pets are our "kids" aka Children with Fur. It's so tough to lose a pet.

  4. what a sweet post - it's true that you never imagine actually having to say goodbye to them - you just assume they will always be there!

and our golden does the same thing - she can't come greet you until she has gone back in our bedroom and grabbed a dirty sock or shirt. sometimes she goes back to get something bigger, and she is SO proud of herself :)

your hiro is so cute, and i'm sure he will miss kirby

  6. This is just so hard to read and so hard to believe... what a great dog and a great friend to all that graced his path...

I'm so sorry for your friends loss and I'm glad that you got to spend time with him.

Pets are just something else. You just never know what's going to happen and they share such an unconditional love that can be never be replaced...

  7. So sad. They really are in our lives for such a short period. What a great reminder that we need to treasure those moments we have with our animals while they're here. They really are family! My thoughts are with your friends.

  12. I had to say goodbye to my Golden, Abby, last month. She lived a very long life and was the best dog I could have asked for. Pets are amazing with their unconditional love and the way they know exactly what their owners need.

  13. Oh, oh, I am so sorry. I dread the day I lose Kitty and Peets. Even thinking about it makes me cry. I was at the gym working out one day, reading an issue of 5280 (their annual pet one) and all of these stories about owners with their pets and then losing their pets...and I started crying! Right then and there on the elliptical. Ugh.

One of my co-workers said, "Dogs are the only chance we have in life to choose our own family members" and I agree. I'm sorry for your friend's loss. :(

  16. And I'm bawling - completely unrelated to being pregnant. I love golden's. Their loyalty . . . I could never describe it.

I'm so sorry for your friends loss, as well as your own. It will be a devestating time.

  20. Oh no, I'm so sorry. I'm in tearing up thinking about the day my parents called me in college to say that our golden had developed cancer, without anyone knowing, and was gone within a day. It is so hard to let our pets go. I'm going to go hug my current golden, chester, right now.

  21. What a beautiful and poignant tribute to Kirby...and a painful reminder of how little time we really have with our pets. Shelby will be 13 this year, Brasco 10. I know the inevitable is drawing closer...I just hope it's peaceful and without pain.

    Hang in there.

  24. I'm so sorry for your friends loss. I have a Golden as well, and this post really hit home. Riley does so many of the same things.

  26. I'm so sorry to hear about your friends dog, it's so hard when your dog passes on. We had to put our Cindy down 2 years ago, she also had the cancer in the throat too. Just reading what you posted got me all teary eyed. That is a wonderful picture of the two dogs in the field. Please give Hiro a big hug for me.
