Snowflakes & manzanita

Hello friends! Is anyone still out there.......this blog's been lame lately.

When it comes to decorating for the holidays, I'm a bit challenged. I don't know whether it's because growing up, we didn't really celebrate the holidays (I blame my Buddhist parents for this particular incident). Or maybe it's the prospect of having to put away all the decorations after the holidays that persuades me to skip the effort year after year.

So this post is as good as it gets when it comes to holiday decor around the Freckles Chick household. I picked up these manzanita branches from here a few months ago..........and promptly forgot about them until just recently when I felt the urge to mix up the mantel. I popped Love Actually into the DVD player, poured a mug of eggnog to go with my rum (yes, I was patient & waited till noon), and hummed along as I added a sprinkle of glitter snowflakes (Target: $1 for a 4 pk). Is that the spirit of the holidays I'm feeling or is just the effects of the eggnog?

Just for fun (and for any new readers out there), let's take a trip down memory lane.

After the effects of eggnog:

What I love is that these versatile branches will probably stick around long after the holidays.
I even adore how they look completely naked, in all of their graceful-fingered, sandblasted glory.

And you all?
Are you the seasonal decor type?

  4. I LOOVE manzanita!! I wanted to use it in my wedding 2 years ago, but had a hard time finding the amount of it I was looking for and the size. But I used it as aspiration for the look I went for.

The mantel is beautiful!!! Wonderdul job!!

  5. I'm not a fan of eggnog, but since this is what it leads to, I may have to give it another shot.

  9. It is my Christmas celebrating opinion that classy and understated is the way to go. And you my friend, have nailed classy and understated your whole life. Or at least the whole life I've known you for. It's one of the main reasons I love you. Well, that and your occasional (classy and understated) snarky comment.

  10. Hahaha, I love it. It's very "you", and that is all that matters.

I am typically a very festive person, you should have seen my house last year! I was thinking of posting pics on my blog. But this year? After everything that has happened, I just can't get in the mood for it. So no holiday cheer here (bah humbug!) (and we're spending the holiday at my mom's anyway) so I'm officially off the hook to decorate.

    Whew.

  12. I love the chic simplicity of it! It is beautiful! All I have up is a tree, hoping next year to be able to branch out since the kids will be older and hopefully keep their hands off of things. lol

  14. Love it... I should do that here since it seems like we won't be seeing any snow in Austin this year (we had high hopes for last weekend, no luck). But that's beautiful.

  19. OH I LOVE your mantlepiece. Take the snowflakes off when Christmas is done and it still looks fab. I love this because I am a 'less is more' decorator for Christmas. Too much red and green (or whatever the colour scheme is) is distracting for me, and I can't wait to take it down!!!

I'm a freak when it come to holiday decorating. Check in next week. My halls [or great room] will be decked.

  21. I love your mantel! The branch with the snowflakes are just holiday enough without it looking like Santa barfed everywhere! AND, it's "winterish" so you won't have to be packing it in on Dec. 26th like everyone else.

I used to deck the halls and all that, but now I have a toddler. I didn't even put up my tree because yelling "Don't Touch!!" every 3 seconds is really annoying and sounds a little scrooge-ish. So, maybe I'll take your cue and find a branch myself!

  31. Girl, you and me, we got a thing goin' on. Yeah, a thing for the manzanita. Love your uber chic Domino style mantle. And I got me some of them glittery snowflakes too - hot pink at Tarjay. Gotta love Tarjay. And your mantle? SO gorgeous. And that unbelievable sunburst mirror? When's the giveaway that I might have a snowball's chance in hell to enter and win it ?

    Please?

I need the help. I'm like Mrs. Claus on crack. Just sayin'

  33. Just perfect in its simplicity! I love the branches. I agree that graceful is the best word to describe them.

  34. I think that this looks gorgeous! Pretty, but simple. Too many people take this as the season for overkill.

  35. I really like the light-colored branches with the snowflakes. The fireplace mantel looks great!

  36. Can I have your whole fireplace? And the mirror above it? Plus all decorative elements? While I think they look just darling in your house, they're really begging to come live with me.

Do you like how I always come over and try to get you to give me your stuff? I'm not above getting you drunk to make you a little less "No, that's mine" and a little more "I'll take it to the PO and send it your way".

And can you blog more? ha.

  37. Oh and I'd just like to say that you must be pretty darn special to write a post once every blue moon and get this kind of comment turn-out. Maybe it's a sign that the people want more of you FC. More!

  39. You should pour about a 1/2 inch of epsom salt in the bottom of the demi-john bottle. I think it would help anchor it. It sparkles and looks like snow. When the holidays are over you can pour it out into the bath and relax! :)
P.S. I wanna see Hiro in a santa hat!

  40. haha love the Brangelina comment! Your mantel is beautiful!! BTW, who designed your blog header? I love it! :)
